HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN?

Posted on November 9, 2008 - 14:07 PM

"We only have enough funds to mail 25% of the 70,000 care packages we will assemble this holiday season.  That means without your help today, more than 50,000 care packages won't reach our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines in time for the holidays."
That was going to be the theme for this year's Operation Gratitude holiday fundraising appeal.  You can read the letter I intended to send as I have included it below.

Today, however, everything changed.  An absolutely amazing individual sent me a follow-up to a story I shared with you last year.  His letter speaks far more profoundly than anything I could write.

On September 26, 2007 he wrote:

"HI Carolyn
Our unit will be leaving Iraq in a few weeks. I just wanted to thank you for your support of all soldiers over here. Your care packages helped lift morale here greatly and you should know helped save the life of a young soldier.

We had a soldier who never got mail, care packages, or anything. He did not have much family and as it turns out was planning on committing suicide on Christmas, but because that soldier received your care package it was like a Christmas gift. It made the soldier change his mind.

The soldier now writes letters and emails to folks whose names were in the box and the soldier's attitude and outlook on life has really improved. This is not a story--it is true. We found out when the soldier finally opened up and talked to the Chain of Command about what was going thru his mind and got help for his depression.

Your care package made a major difference in a human life. Because of your organization, one less family received terrible news at Christmas time.

This has been my third deployment here and I remember how on my first deployment, I almost never got mail and then received a care package from your group.  It made me feel much better about being separated from my loved ones. Is there anything I can do to help out? Your group has helped me so I think I should return the great favor. What can I do to help out? Send $$ donations? Just name it. V/R, SFC J.S."

Today, he simply wanted to send me a brief update and ask again if there is anything he could do to help:

Hello Carolyn,
It has been quite a while but I thought I would update you on the soldier whose life was saved by an Operation Gratitude care package.  His work attitude and leadership skills have so improved that he has since been promoted to Sergeant and is currently a squad leader and "one of the best" in the platoon he is assigned to, I am told by his platoon sergeant. He has a steady girlfriend and just recently re-enlisted.

If you had taken this soldier over a year ago and put him next to the soldier he has become you would swear it was two different people. And it was all due to a care package sent to a soldier by good people back in the states that he had never met before. Please let everybody there know.

As for me, I am leaving the service. Unfortunately, I had a run in with an IED that has ended my military career and left me pretty banged and burned up.  I have been in recovery and had a few reconstructive surgeries over the last months. I only have three days left in service.

Please continue helping those still over there and going over there.  I know we are old news and a lot of folks back home are tired of the news there, but it is important that we not forget those who still serve.  We have to remember and support them "until everyone comes home."

Take care and you once sent me an address where I could mail contributions. Could you send it again? I have lost it along with all my belongings and papers from Iraq. Take care and God bless.  SFC (for another 72 hours) J.S.
Reading his email, I was thrilled to learn about the newfound success of the soldier who had contemplated suicide.  It wasn't until J.S. revealed his own "run in with an IED" that I started to cry.  I realized that life-changing incident happened only days, maybe hours after he emailed us last year. I was pained to think about the year he just experienced.  But then, I admit to you, I completely lost it when he asked me today how he could help us.

After reading his words I was an emotional wreck for the rest of the day.  Here was a wounded Warrior, whose own life took a devastating turn, who felt it was so important that we comprehend the impact of our packages, that he sent us an email 3 days before his final separation from the military urging us to continue our mission.

A Warrior whose own career had abruptly ended, but who felt compelled to donate his personal funds to make sure that his compatriots still received our care packages.

If J.S. can't forget the heroic Warriors still serving, surely we must not forget them either.

And should you have a shred of doubt about your impact through Operation Gratitude, please re-read J.S.'s letters...again and again.

And then continue reading the letter I originally wrote to you:
"Your care packages not only put smiles on our faces; they saved our lives."

As we witness an historic and peaceful transition of our government, and look forward to spending the Holidays with our own family and friends, tens of thousands of U.S. Service Members voluntarily endure the life and death hardships of combat while separated from their loved ones and the comforts of home.

Despite difficult economic times, our nation is blessed by the enduring democratic freedoms of the right to vote and the right to speak...freedoms defended by our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines.

Especially on this Veteran's Day, now is the time to express our appreciation to the men and women of our Military who stand strong and stand guard to ensure our freedoms here at home and to promote the ideals of democracy around the world.  Now is the time that you, too, can be part of their effort by supporting them on the front lines:

"Thank you so much for your care packages and the inspiring words of support, faith, and encouragement you so graciously and lovingly put together and sent to our team in Afghanistan.   It really does make a difference to us over here.  As service members, we are called upon to leave behind family, friends, and the comfort of our homes to support our nation.  Because we have so much, we also will sacrifice to give to those less fortunate.  Some mistakenly believe people serve in the military because we love war; what they don't realize is most of us serve because we love and cherish liberty and freedom and want everyone in the world to enjoy the same as we have in America.  God bless you, Sergeant C.S. and the whole ANA COMM ETT (Afghan National Army Communications Embedded Training Team)"

Operation Gratitude is facing its most challenging year since its inception in 2003.  Right now, 75% of the 70,000 Care Packages we will assemble for our troops will not reach them without your help.

While our Corporate Product Donors have generously provided all the items we need for our care packages, our financial donations have dwindled to a trickle.  Yet, our shipping expenses are higher than ever before at $9.30 for postage alone and more than $10 per package overall.

All donated funds are used for production and shipping expenses.

We do not expend funds on overhead, fundraising campaigns, direct mail or advertising.

We take no salaries.  Every dollar donated directly supports our troops.

http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=pjyuttcab.0.0.9dmzolbab.0&p=http://www.opgratitude.com/gallery.php&id=previewOperation Gratitude sends a care package personally addressed to every deployed service member whose name we receive.

We send 100,000--120,000 packages per year, which requires a cash budget of $1.2 Million/year.

This Holiday Drive, we will assemble 70,000 care packages

Right now, we only have the funds to ship one-quarter of them.

http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=pjyuttcab.0.0.9dmzolbab.0&p=http://www.opgratitude.com/gallery.php&id=preview"We had a tip from an Iraqi child that we gave one of your beanie babies to, who let us know that bad people were making bombs in his neighborhood.  The information he gave us led to a major terrorist cell being captured and countless lives being saved.  You may not realize this, but we utilize everything you send--we do not waste a thing.  Thanks again for what you do.  Captain D.A. US Air Force"

Nothing would be sadder than to have more than 50,000 fabulously full and completed care packages still sitting in our warehouse on Christmas Day.   Fifty thousand Care Packages lovingly assembled by our dedicated volunteers that could not be shipped to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan solely because we did not have the funds for postage.

We need your help to raise $500,000.00 this month to ship the care packages in time for the Holidays.

$10  will send another package
$100 will let 10 service members know you are thinking of them
$500 will tell 50 troops in harm's way that you care.

If you can afford even more, you can touch the hearts and say "Thank You" to even more of our nation's finest.  All donations to Operation Gratitude are tax deductible.

Donations can be made by Credit Card through the Operation Gratitude website or by check payable to Operation Gratitude and mailed to:

We know budgets are limited this year--we are not asking you to spend more than you planned, but perhaps you can take $10 from each designated gift and send that to a Service member in honor of your friend or family member.  We will send your loved one a beautiful tribute letter telling them about your thoughtful gift in their honor--letting them know that they too just sent a package of love to a Soldier or Marine on a battle field.

What could be a better or more meaningful gift this year?
"My company really enjoyed the Operation Gratitude care packages.  They came at an important time here.  You see, we lost a Soldier to this war we're fighting; he was a good friend.  We wondered why we were here, then your letters came and it all "kinda made sense."  We are here for you guys, to protect our moms, dads, little brothers and little sisters and every thing we believe in!  We love your care packages.  We love you guys more than you will ever know.  You are our family.  Keep up the good work.  Specialist J.D. FOB (Forward Operating Base) Rustimiyah, Iraq"
We thank you for your enthusiastic support of Operation Gratitude through the years.  With your kindness, we have been able to send more than 375,000 care packages to men and women far from home to let them know that someone, somewhere, does care about them.

Last year I sent you a letter regarding a Soldier who planned to commit suicide on Christmas Day, but changed his mind when he received our Operation Gratitude care package on Christmas Eve.  Please help us make sure that every deployed service member knows someone cares about him or her this Holiday season.  Your $10 donation  could send the care package that saves a life.

Today I urge you to partner with us once again to serve the courageous members of the United States Military, who risk life and limb to serve us.  Your tax-deductible contribution during the Holidays will allow us to put smiles on the faces of our bravest Americans during a very difficult time away from home and loved ones.  They and we will be forever grateful.

Love,
Tough Guys

p.p.p.s. Please ask your family, friends, colleagues, associates, team mates, neighbors and everyone you know to join us in expressing our nation's appreciation to our troops.  We must raise $500,000.00 this month to send all the packages by the Holidays!  Spread the word!
Thank you!

SUMMER - SUMMER - FALL!
With the passing of Labor Day, Fall is here!  We hope that everyone had a great Summer.  Here at Operation Gratitude we were busily finishing up the Patriotic Drive and sending thousands more packages that had been assembled in May. We also have been preparing the armory, organizing products, accepting deliveries, designing the new Operation Gratitude Magazine for this year's packages and reaching out to new donors and volunteers.  Across the country, scarves are being knit and crocheted, letters written and fundraising activities planned.

We hope you will participate in this Prep Stage: Please visit the  How You Can Help page of ourCandy-asst website for lots of ideas and also think CANDY, CANDY, and more CANDY!  Halloween Candy to be specific.  Not only do we welcome all of yours, but we coordinate with dentists throughout the country who "buy-back" Halloween candy from their patients, and send it to Operation Gratitude to include in our packages.  Encourage your dentist to contact us to learn how they can develop a Buy-Back program to Support Our Troops!  For more information and flyers, please mail opgrat@gmail.com

The 6th Annual Holiday Drive...

... is around the corner!  Oct. 18, 2008, is the first day of packing.  We will start shipping much earlier this year in order to reach more service members than ever before.  We plan to send 70,000 care packages!  That means we need a lot of product and letters to fill the packages and a lot of money to pay the postage.  We hope you will start your fundraisers, collection drives and letter writing campaigns as soon as possible.

Postal rates went up to $9.30/package, but we are trying to keep our overall cost to $10/package.  That still means we need $700,000 to successfully complete this drive.  To assist in our fundraising we are switching to a new, friendlier online donation system which will also make it easier to send mhttp://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=qme4xqcab.0.0.9dmzolbab.0&p=https://www.mysimplegive.com/SG/landing?id=opgrat&id=previewessages to the troops, make tribute donations in someone's honor or memory, and set up recurring donations on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis.  Please check out and use our new Donation Page and then share it with everyone you know! Look for this new icon throughout the Operation Gratitude website; click it and experience the new way to make a donation and send a message to our Troops!

Lewis, Washington, newly promoted Army Corporal Michael "Shaun" Gallagher took possession of the 2008 Jeep® Liberty promised to him in Operation Gratitude's 300,000th care package that he received last January.

Stay tuned to learn what will be in the 400,000th package!

The Troops Speak:
The troops express their appreciation for Operation Gratitude care packages through a constant flow of letters, e-mails and pictures, as seen in the Mail Call and Photo Gallery sections of the Operation Gratitude website.
PackagesArrive'08I am a grateful recipient of one of your care packages.  THANK YOU.  It is people like all of you that make these deployments bearable for us soldiers.  Your support reminds us why we raised our hands in solemn oath to go where our country calls us.  Thank you all very much and God bless y'all.  SPC C.N.

Your packages were a welcome sight to see when they were delivered!  Every gift you send, every card that is read, every special piece of home that is received reflects your deepest commitment to supporting and caring for our deployed troops.  It shows that America remains strong, united, and has the resolve to press ahead during these challenging times as we rebuild Iraq.  You--the real "Heroes" back at home supporting us here-- make us proud to serve America.  Together, we on the frontline and you on the home front are "America's Next Greatest Generation."  Please extend our most sincere "Thank You" to your volunteers for their time, effort, love and support in delivering a little piece of America to our Marines and Sailors in the field.  God Bless you all and Semper Fidelis.  Very Respectfully, LtCol W.H. S.

I received a package from you today after rolling in off of a long mission.  I was tired, dirty and hungry but that box made my day.  I thank each and every one of you for what you do.  People like you make being here worth it.  We get a lot of "Thank Yous" and pats on the back, but people like you deserve it just as much as we do.  It takes all of us to make America what it is.  FREE.  In one way or another we have all made sacrifices- Soldiers and civilians.  United we stand.  That means all of us.  Again, I thank you for my family, my fellow soldiers and myself.  SPC E.T.

JEEP LIBERTY DELIVERED TO CPL GALLAGHER

Posted on July 2, 2008 - 21:15 PM

Operation Gratitude and Chrysler LLC  Deliver Customized Vehicle
to Soldier Upon Return Home from Iraq Deployment

In front of 4,000 soldiers of the 4th Stryker Brigade in Ft. Lewis, Washington, Army Corporal (Cpl.) Michael "Shaun" Gallagher took possession of the vehicle promised to him in the Operation Gratitude care package he received last January: An all-new, custom-painted 2008 Jeep® Liberty. The vehicle was provided to him by Chrysler LLC in partnership with Operation Gratitude, and includes a custom-painted mural that honors the fallen warriors from Gallagher's unit. 250,000th Box

The presentation was the culmination of Operation Gratitude's 300,000th care package celebration, which started on December 15, 2007 with the assembly of the 300,000th package at Operation Gratitude's facility in Van Nuys, CA, continued with the January, 2008 personal delivery by Operation Gratitude representatives of that package to (then) Spc. Gallagher in Iraq, and was concluded on July 1 with the emotional presentation of the vehicle just prior to the redeployment ceremony marking the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division brigade's return from their Iraq deployment.

Frank Fountain, Senior Vice President, External Affairs and Public Policy - Chrysler LLC delivered the vehicle along with Carolyn Blashek, Founder of Operation Gratitude, who was accompanied by several Operation Gratitude volunteers and three Washington State Gold Star mothers.

"Our Armed Forces are making incredible sacrifices every day to protect our freedom and way of life," said Fountain.  "Providing Cpl. Gallagher with an all-new Jeep Liberty vehicle is the least we could do to thank him for his courage and service to our country."

Upon receiving the vehicle keys in his Operation Gratitude package delivered in Iraq almost 6 months ago, (then) Spc. Gallagher expressed his plan to personalize the vehicle with a tribute to the fallen soldiers from his unit, Company A, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team.  To surprise him during the July 1 presentation, Gallagher's family, Operation Gratitude and Chrysler arranged to have the memorial painted while he was still in Iraq.

Gallagher's new Jeep features a custom-painted mural on its hood that reads:

In Memory Of The Fallen Heroes Of Alpha Company 2.23 Infantry
You Will Never Be Forgotten
R.I.P
Joseph Landry III
Donald Valentine III
Nicholas Olson
Luigi Marciante Jr.
Jason Lemke

Jeep 41The traditional battlefield memorial of combat boots, rifle and dog tags appears on both sides of the names.  A phoenix, the bird of mythology that rises out of the ashes, is in the background.  The design was Cpl. Gallagher's concept, sketched onto paper by his mother, Karen Gallagher, and permanently memorialized on the vehicle by artist Mike Lavallee of Killer Paint in Snohomish, WA.  The words, "Thank You Operation Gratitude" are painted on the rear bumper.

"I felt this would be a way to honor them for their service. It represents their lives," Gallagher said, choking back tears.  "Now they are all home and always with us," added his mother, Karen, who traveled from her home in California for the Welcome Home Ceremony and Presentation.

"Meeting (then) Spc. Gallagher and his team in Iraq last January when we hand-delivered the 300,000th Operation Gratitude package was a very special moment, matched only by seeing him take delivery of the Jeep Liberty here at home on American soil," said Blashek.  "Cpl. Gallagher (promoted the morning of the presentation) is a wonderful representative to receive our expression of gratitude for the entire U.S. Military.  We are truly a blessed nation to have the professionalism, dedication and service of men and women like all of you," Blashek told the assembled soldiers.  Jeep 11

"Spc. Gallagher's desire to transform the vehicle into a permanent moving tribute to our fallen Warriors is very touching and meaningful not just for those of us who have lost loved ones, but to every American who honors our Military," added California Gold Star Mother Sue Pollard, an Operation Gratitude Volunteer Supervisor who attended the event.

OpGratitude Breaks records: 350,000+ Care Packages!

OPERATION GRATITUDE HITS NEW MILESTONE
and
PRESENTS JEEP LIBERTY FOR JULY 4th

Encino, CA; June 26, 2008:  For Immediate Release
Surrounded by more than 500 cheering volunteers, the sister of a Marine was surprised to learn that she was packing the 350,000th Care Package on the Operation Gratitude Assembly Line at the National Guard Armory in Van Nuys, CA. during the 2008 Memorial Day Weekend.

"This package represents the extraordinary generosity and efforts of our supporters--American Citizens from every state of this great nation," exclaimed founder, Carolyn Blashek.  "Their donations of time, Wish List items and funds for postage have enabled us to send more than 2.8 Million pounds of product and over 17 Million individual items to our brave men and women fighting on the front lines" she stated.

Blashek, surrounded by the 70 "Hard Corps" Volunteers who supervise the production and Assembly Line operations, paid special tribute to our fallen Warriors and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice.  She thanked the more than 300 Corporate Friends and Sponsors who have donated items by the pallet load, and acknowledged the dedicated and cooperative efforts of other grass-roots, all-volunteer organizations such as Give 2 The Troops and Treat the Troops (The Cookie Lady) that have similarly supported our Military for many years.

"We applaud the massive one day goal by the great folks at Move America Forward to best our annual 110,000 individually addressed care package shipments" declared Bill Van Trump, Operation Gratitude's Volunteer Director of Development, but he added, "We are most proud of the tens of thousands of Operation Gratitude volunteers across the country who, week after week, month after month, year after year since the Iraq War started in March 2003, have toiled tirelessly to ensure that every Service Member deployed overseas knows they are always foremost on our minds and will never be forgotten."

To culminate the organization's record-breaking Patriotic Drive, Volunteer Director of Operations, Charlie Othold, announced that Operation Gratitude and Chrysler LLC would present a specially designed 2008 Jeep Liberty to SPC Michael "Shaun" Gallagher on July 1 at Ft. Lewis, Washington.

"Carolyn (Blashek) and I were honored to travel to Iraq earlier this year to personally hand our 300,000th Care Package to SPC Gallagher at Camp Warhorse in Baquoba," recalled Othold.  "We are thrilled that he and his comrades have returned home safely and that we can give him this appropriately named vehicle, the Jeep Liberty, in time to celebrate America's Independence Day on July 4th" he added.

Operation Gratitude will send its 400,000th Care Package on December 13, 2008 during the organization's Annual Holiday Drive.

Patriotic Drive Continues

Operation Gratitude Continues 2008 Patriotic Drive
During Memorial Weekend May 24-25

Encino, CA--May 21, 2008
Continuing the fast pace of last weekend's Patriotic Drive opening,  Operation Gratitude's tireless volunteers, joined by senior Military officials and special guests,
will  prepare and ship thousands of additional care packages to U.S. Troops deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan and on ships at sea over the Memorial Weekend, May 24-25, 2008.

In observance of Memorial Day on Saturday May 24, the organization will pay tribute to our troops with a screening of the documentary "Warriors...in their own Words" trailer.  On the same day, Operation Gratitude will celebrate two Milestone Events: The 10th Care Package Drive and the shipment of its 350,000th Care Package.

"In just 5 years, during 10 care package drives, Operation Gratitude has sent more personalized care packages than any other Military Support Organization in history," exclaimed Charlie Othold, Director of Operations.   "This accomplishment is a tribute to the dedicated volunteers and donors who have given so generously in time, effort, funds and product," he continued.

In an emotional ceremony on May 18, Othold, a Vietnam Veteran who served 20 years in the Air Force, and has been a contractor for Lockheed Martin for 20+ years, was awarded the Department of the Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service.  In presenting the medal, Major General William Wade, The Adjutant General of the State of California, noted Othold's exemplary humanitarian and volunteer service as Operation Gratitude's Director of Operations, and praised Othold's management skills and personal efforts that enabled the production and shipment of 350,000 care packages to service members deployed overseas.

"All of us at Operation Gratitude are thrilled that Charlie has been recognized in this very meaningful way," said Carolyn Blashek, the organization's founder.  "Not only does he brilliantly organize and execute the entire operation, but he does so with  complete calm, patience and good humor," she continued.  Joan Rimmon, a long-time Volunteer Supervisor added: "We are blessed to have him running the show!"

All 70 of the Volunteer Supervisors were presented the "President's Volunteer Service Award" during a special ceremony on May 17.  Blashek promised additional volunteer and donor recognition during the May 24th Memorial Day program.
