The members of the Randolph Community Arts Council are wonderful people who bring cultural Art events into the town of Randolph, Massachusetts. The idea to have a “Concert for the Troops” came from a member--the success of the concert was made possible with the help of other RCAC members, family, and friends. The focus of the fundraiser was twofold…… to raise money for the Troops, and to make our young people aware of the importance to support our U.S. Service Members. It appears we have succeeded on both. The Randolph Community Arts Council is very proud to have been involve in something as important as supporting our Troops.

Chatsworth Hills Academy Middle School As written by students Jordan Valentine and Michael Mondheim
Chatsworth Hills Academy has a long history of service learning. This year, the Middle School students chose Operation Gratitude as the recipient of their community service project. Our school has scheduled four collection dates during which to collect items to send overseas to the troops fighting the War on Terrorism. So far, after three collections, we have collected food, money, DVDs, CDs, and miscellaneous items. We collected 1110 food items, 400 miscellaneous items, and 155 CDs/DVDs. On top of that, we raised $379.39 in cash. Best Buy, in Porter Ranch, donated $300 to almost match our cash earnings to help us buy more CDs and DVDs. Students also wrote letters, composed poetry, drew pictures, and made cards during each collection week to be sent with the packages. Our goal for the last collection, scheduled for the week of May 2nd, is to collect another 1000 items – including items like chapstick, phone cards, hats, cameras, and individually wrapped food items. At Chatsworth Hills Academy Middle School even though we are kids, we know that our efforts are important and we know we can make a difference.

Operation Gratitude at the Vermont City Marathon Burlington, Vermont Sunday, May 29, 2005
After completing my first marathon in Philadelphia last year, I knew I wanted to use my next race as an opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause. Recognizing the tremendous sacrifices our troops were making overseas, I wanted to support them in some way. It seemed especially appropriate since the race fell on the Sunday before Memorial Day.
A colleague at work introduced me to Operation Gratitude, an incredible organization sending care packages to our troops. I visited their web site and read thank you letters from soldiers that had received packages during their deployment. Their genuine appreciation for gifts like disposable cameras, snacks and games encouraged me to raise as much money as possible. I was so impressed by the degree of selflessness in each soldiers’ words.
During twenty weeks of training, I asked friends, family and co-workers to contribute what they could to the fundraiser. Unsurprisingly, their willingness to support Operation Gratitude was immediate and extremely generous. In a matter or weeks, we had raised over $700.
A marathon is a great way to tour a new city, and Burlington did not disappoint. Fantastic weather, beautiful views of Lake Champlain and devoted volunteers made my race day utterly flawless. Moreover, the ability to support Operation Gratitude and the thousands of U.S. troops it serves made each mile more worthwhile.
